Below, we explain how surveys and questionnaires work, with real questionnaire studies published by PhD researchers on ScholarsColab.
Common question types at a glance
| Type | Example | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Yes/no | “Have you used online learning this year?” | Simple facts, screening |
| Multiple choice | “Which device do you use most? Phone / laptop / tablet” | Categories |
| Likert scale | “I find online classes useful: strongly disagree … strongly agree” | Attitudes and opinions |
| Rating scale | “Rate the course from 1 to 10” | Satisfaction, quality |
| Open-ended | “What would improve the course?” | Reasons and ideas in people’s own words |
Example: questionnaire studies by our mentors
To explain how a questionnaire study works, we look at real studies published by our mentors. Our data: 41,792 papers, mostly published between 1998 and 2026, by 967 ScholarsColab mentors (data updated 15 October 2026).
Step 1
Look at real questionnaire studies. Each of these surveyed a specific group of people (the selection changes every day):
| Published paper | Year | Citations |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers towards childhood vaccination in Lagos State, Nigeria IYEVHOBU KENNETH OSHIOKHAYAMHE | 2024 | 11 |
| Influence of Demographic Factors on Non-Users' Perception Towards Green Cosmetic Products: A Study in and Around Kolkata, India Sudipta Majumdar | 2018 | 6 |
| Improving EFL teaching in Chinese universities: perceptions of teachers with Oversea experience Xiaoshu Xu | 2023 | 5 |
| A nationwide postal survey on the perception of Malaysian public healthcare providers on family medicine specialists’(PERMFAMS) clinical performance, professional attitudes and … Boon-How Chew | 2015 | 3 |
| A co-relational study of community midwife and maternal health care system: a questionnaire survey in rural areas of Pakistan Rashid Menhas | 2015 | 2 |
Step 2
Spot the population in each title. Students, teachers, nurses, farmers, employees: every survey starts by deciding who to ask. That decision shapes who the results apply to.
Step 3
Spot what was measured. Most of these studies measure knowledge, attitudes, perceptions or satisfaction: things you can only learn by asking people.
Step 4
See where questionnaires are used. 68 of the 41,792 papers in our data (0.2%) show this in their title: questionnaire / opinion survey. It is most common in Social sciences & education, where 2% of papers show it. Questionnaires are the main tool in the social sciences, education, management and public health; engineering and computer science rely more on experiments and simulations.
How to design a questionnaire
- Start from your research question and list exactly what you need to know.
- Use validated scales where they exist rather than inventing new questions.
- Keep each question to one idea, in simple, neutral language.
- Choose answer formats that match how you will analyse the data.
- Order questions logically: easy and general first, sensitive and personal later.
- Pilot it with a small group, then fix unclear or confusing questions.
- Plan your sample and distribution: who receives it, how, and how you will raise the response rate.
Common mistakes reviewers point out
- Double-barrelled questions, such as “Is the course useful and well organised?”, which ask two things at once.
- Leading questions that push respondents towards an answer.
- No reliability or validity check for the scales used.
- Low response rates without discussing who did not respond.
- Generalising from a convenience sample, such as only the researcher’s own students.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a survey and a questionnaire?
A survey is the overall research method of collecting information from a group of people. A questionnaire is the specific set of questions used to collect that information.
What is a Likert scale?
A Likert scale asks respondents how strongly they agree or disagree with a statement, usually on a five- or seven-point scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree.
How many respondents does a survey need?
It depends on the size of the population, the precision required and the analysis planned. Sample size calculators and power analysis give a minimum number for quantitative surveys.
What is a pilot study for a questionnaire?
A pilot study tests the questionnaire on a small group before the main study, to find unclear questions, check timing and estimate reliability.
Are online surveys reliable?
They can be, if the questionnaire is well designed and the sample is appropriate. The main risks are self-selection and low response rates, which can bias the results.
