Operationalization: Conceptual vs Operational Definitions, with Examples

Home › Research Methodology › Operationalization

Quick answerA conceptual definition explains what an idea means in words (for example, “research impact is the influence a study has on other research”). An operational definition says exactly how you will measure it (for example, “the number of citations on Google Scholar”). Operationalization is the step of turning an abstract idea into something you can measure.

Below, we explain the process step by step, using the way ScholarsColab measures ideas in its own data.

Conceptual vs operational definitions at a glance

Concept Conceptual definition Operational definition (how it is measured)
Job satisfaction How content employees feel about their work Score on a 10-item Likert-scale questionnaire
Obesity Excess body fat that may harm health Body mass index of 30 or more
Concrete strength Ability of concrete to resist loads Compressive strength in MPa after 28 days, by a standard test
Model performance How well a model makes correct predictions Accuracy and F1-score on a held-out test set

Example: how ScholarsColab operationalizes its ideas

To explain operationalization, we show how we turned two ideas into measurements for the data on these pages: 41,792 papers, mostly published between 1998 and 2026, by 967 ScholarsColab mentors (data updated 15 October 2026).

Step 1
Start with the concept. We wanted to compare the impact of different kinds of papers. Conceptually, impact means how much a paper influences other research.

Step 2
Choose a measurable indicator. Influence cannot be seen directly, so we used citations: how many times other papers have referred to it, as recorded on Google Scholar.

Step 3
Define the details. We compared papers from the same publication years, and used the median because a few famous papers distort the average.

Step 4
Operationalize a second concept. We also wanted to know each paper’s research method. We operationalized it as “the method named in the paper’s title”: a title containing “questionnaire” counts as a questionnaire study, “simulation” as a simulation, and so on.

Step 5
Check what the measurement misses. Only 7,794 of the 41,792 papers (18.6%) name a recognisable method or design in their title; the rest cannot be classified from the title alone. Every operational definition captures only part of its concept. Citations miss influence on teaching or industry; titles miss methods that are not named. Saying so openly is part of good research.

How to operationalize a concept in your study

  1. Define the concept in words, using established definitions from the literature.
  2. Identify its dimensions (for example, job satisfaction may include pay, colleagues and workload).
  3. Choose indicators for each dimension, preferably from validated instruments.
  4. Decide the measurement details: scale, units, timing and who measures.
  5. Pilot the measure and check its reliability and validity.
  6. Report the definitions clearly in your methodology, so others can repeat your study.

Common mistakes reviewers point out

  • No operational definition at all, so readers cannot tell what was measured.
  • An indicator that captures only a small part of the concept.
  • Home-made questionnaires without validation.
  • Changing how something is measured partway through the study.

Frequently asked questions

What is operationalization in research?

Operationalization is the process of turning an abstract concept, such as stress or quality, into something measurable, by choosing specific indicators and measurement procedures.

What is the difference between a conceptual and an operational definition?

A conceptual definition explains what a concept means in words. An operational definition specifies exactly how the concept will be measured or observed in a study.

Why is operationalization important?

It makes research measurable, repeatable and comparable. Without it, different researchers may measure the same concept in different ways and reach conflicting conclusions.

Can one concept have several operational definitions?

Yes. Research impact, for example, can be measured by citations, downloads or policy mentions. Choose the one that best fits your research question, and justify it.

What is a conceptual framework?

A conceptual framework shows the main concepts of a study and how they are expected to relate to each other, often as a diagram. Operational definitions then specify how each concept is measured.

About the data on this page. The ScholarsColab Research Methods Index is built from the Google Scholar publication lists of PhD researchers who mentor on ScholarsColab, and is updated daily as mentors and publications are added. Methods, designs and paper types are identified from titles, so papers whose titles do not mention them are not counted in those groups. The mentors are not a random sample of all researchers (engineering and computer science are strongly represented), so the figures describe this group of researchers and may not apply to research as a whole.
